Richard Henry Avery, Jr., 89, passed away Tuesday, November 10, 2015. A lifelong resident of the Peninsula, he was dedicated to our country by serving honorably from 1944-1953 in the U.S. Navy during World War II and Korean wars. He also retired from the C & O Railroad in and the Seafarers Union as a Contract Negotiator for the National Union. Richard was a gifted athlete playing many different sports. He loved playing golf as much as he could. He also loved the square dancing scene. He was a member of the Virginia Tidal Waves Dance Club where he danced, called and helped teach new dancers the art. Richard was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice G. Avery. He is survived by his sons, Richard O. Avery and his wife Alesia of Conway, SC and Graham L. Avery and his wife Laura of Mebane, NC; sister, Joyce Hinnant of Hampton; grandchildren, Kathy Brown, Jason Avery, Erick Avery, Wayne Avery, Patrick Avery and Kevin Avery; and many nieces and nephews. The family wishes to give special thanks to Susie Harris, for all of the care and kindness she has showed over the years.
