Starts at 5:00 pm (Eastern time)
With profound sadness and deep love, we announce the passing of Rena Mitchell Rhea, age 92, of Hampton, Virginia, who passed peacefully on Sunday, May 17, 2026.
Born on June 24, 1933, in Colerain, North Carolina, Rena was raised with the values of kindness, hard work, and generosity that would define her entire life. In September of 1959, she married the love of her life, Riley E. Rhea, and together they built a life and family rooted in love before making Hampton, Virginia their home.
Rena was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend whose giving spirit touched countless lives. She never hesitated to help someone in need, offer comfort, or make others feel welcome. Her greatest joy came from spending time with family and friends, creating memories that will live on for generations.
In 1976, Rena and her family became owners of Century Lanes, where she became known by many in the community not only as a business owner, but as someone who genuinely cared for the people around her. Her warmth, generosity, and caring nature made lasting impressions on everyone fortunate enough to know her.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Riley E. Rhea.
She is survived by her daughter, Joan Garner and husband Bill Garner; her son, Lewis Rhea; her grandchildren, Josh Garner and Becca Glazier, and Danny Rhea and Courtney Rhea; and her great-grandchildren, Joshua Garner Jr., Nicolas Garner, and Danny Rhea Jr.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at 5:00 PM at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, Hampton.
Rena will be laid to rest beside her husband at Edgewood Cemetery in Windsor, N.C. Friday, May 22, 2026 at 3:00 PM.
Though deeply missed, her legacy remains in every life she touched.
The Family will gather at the home of Joan and Bill Garner.
