IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Reggie
Hughes
September 16, 1931 – November 7, 2021
Clyde Reginald "Reggie" Hughes died Sunday, November 7, 2021. Born in Lunenburg Co., Virginia, he had been a Hampton resident since 1950. A US Navy veteran, he was a graduate of the Newport News Shipyard Apprentice School and retired from the shipyard in 1992 after 41 years of service. He was a very active member of Hampton Roads Baptist Church, serving as a deacon and trustee, singing in the choir for many years and teaching Sunday school. After retirement, he began his own handyman business and thoroughly enjoyed being his own boss and being able to only charge people what he thought they could pay. Reggie loved his family and was always willing to take on any home improvement project at his children's homes while visiting. He was a quiet, peaceful man and was the backbone of the family.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Jeanine B. Hughes, his parents, William C. and Mary Ellen Martin Hughes, and four siblings, Randolph, James, and Robert Cecil Hughes and Louise Midkiff. Survivors include his children, Thomas Hughes (Anne), Timothy Hughes (Ressie), and Carolyn Sawyer (Tom); ten grandchildren, Ava Nicole Hughes, Thomas Paul Sawyer, Jr. (Vanessa), Olivia Sawyer, Brittany Terry (Josh), Allison Lockhart (Chris), Eleanor Sawyer, Melissa Hughes, Hannah Hughes, Joey Hughes, and Abigail Rodriguez (Lazaro); four great-granddaughters; and two great-grandsons with another one on the way.
The family will receive friends from 10-11am Thursday, November 11, 2021, at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home with a funeral service beginning at 11:00. The service may be viewed live by clicking HERE . Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park.
