Anita Betz
April 3, 1950 – July 15, 2024
Rebecca Anita Betz, 74, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, July 15, 2024. Born and raised in New York, she was the daughter of Joseph H. and Patricia Betz. Becky was a graduate of Hood College where she received a BA in Psychology in 1972. She went on to attend William and Mary College receiving an MBA in Business Administration in 1977.
At the height of her business career, Becky worked as a comptroller for Busch Properties in Williamsburg, VA. During this period, she began volunteering as a reading tutor for the Literacy Council. Soon after, she began volunteering for VISTA (Volunteers in Service for America) working with the Literacy Council. Becky also worked for two years as the coordinator of Parents As Teachers and the Hampton City Literacy Program at the public library. In 1993 she became the Director of the Peninsula Literacy Council which in 1995 changed its name to Peninsula READS. She later worked as a Parent Involvement Facilitator for Hampton City Schools.
Becky enjoyed gardening and truly had a green thumb. She loved the water, boating, and going to the beach, especially at Emerald Isle, North Carolina. She also loved reading, cooking, and hosting family get-togethers.
Preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Joseph W. Betz; her aunt, Jackie Dunn of Hampton; and her brother-in-law, John Hargett; she is survived by her husband, Michael Crawford; sister, Elizabeth "Betsy" Betz; daughter, Wendy Storck (Kenneth); grandchildren, Skyler Crawford (Beth), Meagan Storck and Marina Storck; great-granddaughter, Maicey Crawford; sister-in-law, Judy Betz; sisters-in-law, Carole Hargett and Judy Strickland (John); nephews, William Betz, Jay Strickland (Kristi) and Jeff Strickland (Stephanie); niece, Nicole Silva (Joseph); cousin, Carol Thornton; numerous great-nephews; one great-niece; many friends and dear neighbors; and her beloved dog, Pedro.
A private memorial service will be held.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests expressions of sympathy be made as memorial contributions to the Peninsula Food Bank click here and the Animal Aid Society click here.
