Home Going Celebration
Queenie D. Powell, 89, peacefully walked into the arms of Jesus on Oct. 9, 2018. She had been homebound since early April and subsequently started receiving in-home hospice in Sept. The last week of her life she had the opportunity to see almost all of her family who came from as far away as California, Texas and Arizona to be with her. She died peacefully at 8:39pm with daughters Allma, Carolyn and Harriette in the home.
Queenie Powell was born in Washington, NC on March 27, 1929, to loving parents Queenie King and Joseph Barnes. She attended public school in Washington, and also went on to cosmetology school. Queenie moved to New York City where she worked in the food industry. She also lived in Arizona before relocating to Virginia, where she attended Freedom Life Church.
She married twice and from those unions had seven children. She was preceded in death by her oldest daughter Joyce Dabney and her youngest son Jean Powell Jr. Her surviving family include: daughters, Allma Gooding (Arizona), Carolyn Fair (Hampton), and Harriette Fair (California, and Georgette Norman (Texas), son, Gerald Felder (Hampton) and son-in-law, Carroll Dabney "Bunky" (Hampton) She has left behind 13 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren 9 great- great grandchildren, and a host of friends and BINGO buddies.
Queenie enjoyed cooking, baking and watching the Price is Right, but most of all her passion was Bingo. She was full of life and thoughtful. She will be missed by all who knew her.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 4:30 PM Saturday, October 13, 2018 at R. Hayden Smith Funeral home, 245 S. Armistead Ave. in Hampton, 757-723-3191. Family will receive visitors at the residence of Carolyn Fair, 131 Woodland Road, Hampton.
