IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Pia Yvonne
Murphy
October 5, 2017
Pia Yvonne Murphy was born on June 28, 1961 in Washington, DC to the late Franklin Douglas, Sr and Verna Yvonne Douglas. From this union came one brother and two sisters. Pia attended DC public schools and graduated from Anacostia Senior High school in 1979.
She began her working career at the U.S. Department of Transportation and later went on to enlist in the U.S. Army. She was stationed at the U.S. Army base SHAPE in Mons, Belgium and from there was deployed to Bosnia. Upon returning to the states, she was stationed at Fort Stewart in Savannah, Ga and finally Fort Monroe in Hampton, Virginia , where she decided to settle and make a life. After her military service, Pia continued to work in the field of Ophthalmology. She was an ophthalmic tech at the Wal-Mart Optical Center then at Riverside Hampton Roads Eye Associates , where she would be employed for 13 years.
Pia was a loving , c aring and principled perso n, who was quick to tell you where she stood and even quicker to help a friend. With her beautiful smile and infectious laugh, Pia was often the source of happiness and humor for those around her. Pia firmly believed in family first , whether blood or community, she loved her family . B irthday s , wedding s, graduations or simply a weekend BBQ, once a friend, Pia considered you family and would attend and often organize out of a sense of familial duty. Pia was a lso a passionate and diehard Washington Redskins fan , look ing forward to game day as well as any opportunity to gloat in victory , or simply a Cowboys loss . In March of 2011, Pia received Ralphie, her beloved Yorkie Poo into her home and her heart.
Pia met her "Boo" (Jay) 15 years ago shortly after settling in Hampton. It was a night out at the club with her sisters. For Jay, from that first chance meeting, her contagious smile and feisty personality captured his heart and they knew they would be together for e ver. Pia was determined to make a better life and set out to do so with Jay as her lifelong partner. Pia was his rock, his ace; having his back at all times, she would often wipe away the stains of a bad day with a simple smile. She did all she could to make sure he had a s strong a local family foundation as she did and that her own family accepted him as an integral part of their family unit . Her parents loved Jay as another son and were grateful to him for caring for their dear child.
Throughout their years together they met some great friends and coworkers who became a second family, a blessing for both who were not native to the area. For Jay, he feels truly lucky that God provided him a chance encounter with Pia , a vibrant, young woman, who would become his best friend, his motivation and his perfect love.
