Philip Schuyler Grant, 94, a retired Army Colonel, died peacefully on May 17, 2017.   His wife of 62 years, the former Grace Alice McDowall Grant, died in 2009.

Philip was the youngest of Major General Walter and Marjorie Grant's four children, Walter (Gladys), Francis (Penelope) and Marjorie (Hugh) all of whom preceded Philip in death.

Philip is survived by his children, Elizabeth (Stephen), Philip (Patricia), W. Schuyler, Douglas, Catherine, David, Eugene (Laurie), 14 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Philip was born on March 13, 1923 in Ft. Leavenworth, KS to a military family. He and his three siblings spent their young lives on various military posts throughout the U.S. and the Philippines. Because his father was a Calvaryman, Philip learned to become an accomplished horseman at an early age. He attended the United States Military Academy at West Point and upon graduation was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant Infantry and sworn in by his father (USMA 1900) on 6 June 1944 (D-Day).

Following basic training at Fort Benning, GA, Philip arrived in France in early 1945 as World War II was in its final stages. He was stationed at various posts in Europe including Dachau where he met the love of his life, Grace Alice McDowall. who was a volunteer for the American Red Cross. Philip and Grace were married in Bern, Switzerland on February 15, 1947.

Philip's military career spanned many stations including Fort Benning, GA; Fort Ord, CA; Stuttgart, Germany, Fort Lee, VA; Fort Leavenworth, KS; a tour in Korea; Marmion Military Academy, Aurora, IL; Fort Monroe, VA; Fort Richardson, AK and back to Fort Monroe, VA where he retired as Comptroller, CONARC. Prior to his first station at Fort Monroe, Philip earned his MBA from the University of Alabama.

Philip was an excellent athlete, but his greatest success came on the golf course. He was part of the All Army golf team in 1956, and won many tournaments including the 1969 Alaska Amateur Championship and the 1981 VSGA Senior Amateur Championship.

Following his retirement from the Army, Philip's greatest achievement was as the loving caregiver for his bride, Grace, who was bed-ridden in their home for the last 15 years of her life. Philip's love and commitment to Grace during such a difficult time is an enduring legacy not to be forgotten by his family and all those who knew him.

The family extends their love and gratitude to Hope Carraway who has been Philip's primary caretaker. Hope lovingly cared first for Grace and then for Philip - 26 years in all.  The family also expresses its appreciation for the loving care from Philip's other caregivers, DeShawn (Shawn) Smith, Senequa (Nikki) Harris, and Marilyn Trotter.  It was evident that they loved the man they cared for.

The family will be receiving family and friends from 5 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 23 at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home in Hampton, VA.   A funeral mass will be celebrated by Father Peter Creed on Wednesday, May 24 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Mary's Star of the Sea, Fort Monroe, VA. Interment will be alongside his bride Grace at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
