Peggy Brown Shannon, a lifelong resident of Hampton, passed on March 12, 2026, at the age of 74. Born November 29, 1951, in Richmond, Peggy grew up in the Buckroe area of Hampton and graduated from Kecoughtan High School in 1970.
Peggy loved to travel, cook, host gatherings, shop for "deals", and root for the Washington Redskins. She attended many oyster roasts, National Games, bluegrass festivals and movies at the AMC. Peggy was a caring person who helped many along the way. She will be missed by all who had the great pleasure of knowing and loving her. Her son, Sean, will always be her biggest pride and joy.
Peggy was employed by the Supervisor of Shipbuilding (SUPSHIP), C & R, USN for 33 years working her way up from Supply Clerk to Head of the Integrated Logistics Support Division. In 2004 she was selected for a position in the Navy Nuclear Logistics Directorate's Newport News satellite office as the Nuclear Logistics Team Leader for the Norfolk region. She retired from that position in 2006 with a total of 35 years of government service. At the time of her retirement, she was awarded the Civil Service Meritorious Service Medal, one of the highest civilian awards within the Federal Government. Immediately following her retirement Peggy was employed by Gryphon Technologies as a Senior Acquisition Logistician for the Navy's Chemical, Biological and Radiological Defense Program. She retired from that position in 2017.
Peggy was predeceased by her parents, Laura and Kenneth Brown; sister, Tammy Brown Wilson; and brother, Kenneth W. Brown.
She is survived by her son, Sean H. Shannon; nieces, Ashley Francis (Erik) and Kate Berger (Andy); nephew, Jeremy Wilson (Marjorie); great niece, Rylie Francis; and great nephews, Connor Francis and Benjamin Berger. In addition to her immediate family, Peggy is survived by cousins; her best friend, Barb Jones; her long-time companion, Chuck Forest; and many friends.
A funeral service will be held at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home at 10 am, Wednesday, March 18 2026. Interment will be at Hampton Memorial Gardens on Butler Farm Road immediately following service. A reception will be held for family and friends at the home of Ellen Sorrell to continue the celebration of her life.
