Paul Albert Hunter, 94, of Newport News, died Wednesday, September 10, 2014. At The Gardens at Warwick Forest. Born in East Liberty, PA, he was the son of Albert Zimmerman Hunter and Jessie Handlon Hunter. He was a graduate of the University of Virginia with a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering and a member of Sigma Nu fraternity. He got his airplane pilot's license at the age of 16 and was 1/8 owner of a Piper Cub with other fraternity brothers at UVA. He was inducted into the US Army, at Langley Field, in 1944 and assigned to the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) and discharged in 1945. He continued to work for the NACA and its successor, NASA until he retired early in 1971, after which he and his wife, Carol, achieved the position of Direct Distributors with the Amway Corporation. He was an accomplished musician on the clarinet, drums, guitar and piano having performed in a Swing Band and sung in The Society of Barber Shop Quartets of America and Our Lady of Mt Carmel Choir. As a charter member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, he served as Lector, Cantor and Eucharistic Minister. Although he loved flying, after marriage, he switched his passion to sailing and was a member of the Langley Yacht Club and built a sailboat. He had been active in the Republican Party. Mr. Hunter was predeceased by his wife, Carol Myers Hunter, an infant daughter, Carol Taliaferro Hunter, a son, Paul Bruce Hunter and a grandson, Kevin Todd Coons. Surviving are his daughters, Ellen Hunter Dudley, and her husband Richard, of Seaford, VA, Louisa Harrison Coons, and her husband, Perry, of Denver, CO, eight grandchildren, Joshua, John, Elizabeth Dudley, Anna Dudley Gimpel and her husband Shawn, Christopher Harrison and his wife Brandy, David Harrison and his wife Jamie, Kelly Blood and her husband Pete, and Chris Coons, and seven great grandchildren, Bailee Dudley, James Gimpel, Sienna Harrison, Dawson and Ashlynn Harrison, and Riley and Brendan Nix . A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated 11:00 AM Friday, September 19, 2014 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 100 Harpersville Rd, Newport News, VA 23601. Burial will follow at Peninsula Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM Thursday, September 18 at Berceuse Funeral and Cremation Traditions, at 2609 Cunningham Dr., Hampton, VA 23666.
