Patricia Ann Olive Doop passed from this life to the next on Good Friday, March 30, 2018.
She was born June 3, 1935 to Grace Dorothy Wooldridge and Robert H. Olive at Fort Monroe, Virginia. She grew up on South Hope Street in Phoebus where all the best-looking girls in town lived. She attended Phoebus Graded School, Buckroe Junior High School and graduated from 'the real' Hampton High School Class of 1953. She was a proud Crabber for the remainder of her life.
Patsy spent her summers on Buckroe Beach and in the bleachers at local baseball stadiums. After high school, her mother pried her off the beach and advised to her seek gainful employment, which she found with the US Army at Fort Monroe and Fort Riley, Kansas as a Federal Civil Servant for the entirety of her career.
She married Melvin George Doop in 1956 and moved to Manhattan Kansas, where her husband attended Kansas State University Engineering school, and where her first child, Raymond, was born halfway through college. Anne was a graduation gift born literally the day George completed school, followed quickly by Jeanne, who was an immaculate conception. Her husband was in the aerospace industry and they traveled across the country living in such exciting places as Grand Forks, North Dakota, and Miami, Oklahoma. Once his career advanced, the family moved to California. Having been raised in Phoebus, Patsy was not happy with living in Los Angeles, where all the hot shot engineers were employed. Fortunately, the small beach towns surrounding LA were affordable back then, and Ray, Anne and Jeanne spent their early years on beaches of the Pacific Ocean.
Patsy returned to the beaches of Virginia and Fort Monroe in 1968 with three kids in tow. She retired with 30 years of service in 1991.
Pat was preceded in death by her parents and her mother's husband, Mack Alligood, her ex -husband, one of her favorite cousins, Thomas Allman Wooldridge, and Uncles and Aunts Fred and Sue Wooldridge and Sara and Leon Alligood. She is survived by her three children and four grandchildren.
A visitation will take place in the chapel at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home Saturday, April 7 from 2 to 3pm, followed by a celebration of Patsy's life. A proper Irish send-off will be held immediately following the service. Her cremains will be privately scattered in the waters off Buckroe Beach and Fort Monroe.
The family would like to thank the staff of Grace Hospice, Dr. Sue Worbois and Dr. Jeremy Hoff for the outstanding care they provided our beloved Mother.
Patsy wanted her obit and service to be fun and even selected her own photo.
In lieu of flowers, Patsy asks that donations be made in her honor to your local animal aid shelter or the Fort Monroe National Monument.
