Pamela was a graduate of Churchland High School and became a registered nurse after graduating from Norfolk General Hospital School of Nursing. She later earned her bachelor's and master's degrees while raising a family and working full time in a wide variety of nursing capacities including open heart surgery, operating room supervisor, occupational health, and infection control. Pamela was a loving and open-hearted person with a wide circle of friends. She loved working in her flower garden, painting, and playing bridge with her "bridgettes." She enjoyed sailing with her friends at the Hampton Yacht Club, and especially traveling the Caribbean islands. She later discovered golf and enjoyed playing at Pinehurst. She was happiest at the beach with her family and friends. Pamela was also a long-time member of St. John's Episcopal Church, where she sang in the choir for over 20 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, C.J. and Mary Lou Waddell, her twin sister Donna Tarkenton, and her stepmother LaVohn Waddell. She is survived by her husband of 33 years, Hurley J. Shaw III, her daughters Jennifer Smith (David) and Julia Thompson (Olin), her stepdaughter Sarah Peyton (Josh), her stepson James Shaw (Angela), her brother Bryan Waddell (Jean), and grandchildren Ella and Jack Smith, Will Wrenn, Cullin, Josh and Kendall Thompson, and Evelyn, Audrey and Caitlin Shaw.
