Opal Mercedes Towns, 100, died on Tuesday, June 5, 2018. Born in Larned, Kansas, she was a resident of Hampton Roads since 1999. Opal Towns was kind, giving, and beautiful in spirit. She loved life and especially children. Opal retired from the Chicago Board of Education where she taught children and worked as a school community representative. She took great joy in playing the piano and doing charity work for various organizations, including Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, VA. She lived a fully and joyous life dedicated to helping others.

Opal was predeceased in death by her husband, Garvon Towns; parents, Alpha and George Towns Sr; and siblings, Melva, Eddie, and Louise. Surviving are her daughter, Yvonne Turner; brother, George Towns Jr; grandchildren, Rosalind Buford and Henry Howze (Jessica); great-grandchildren, James A. Webb (Melissa), Joseph L. Crawford (Monica), Tony Howze and Jacob Lemeul Howze; and great-great-grandchildren, James Webb Jr, Jamesse, Jaelyn, Jo'karl, Jordan, Javon, Justice, and Zakiyyah.
