Oliver "Jay" Joseph Hayes, 73, was called home on Wednesday, August 5, 2015. Born in Albemarle County, NC, he has been a resident of Hampton for over 60 years. Jay was a graduate of Hampton High School and loved Crabber football. A Telephone Pioneer, he retired as a Data Technician with Verizon in 1996 after 31 years. Formerly a member of Newmarket Baptist Church, he was attending First Friends Church. Jay is preceded in death by his mother Dorothy Pridgen Hayes and his father Ogie Long Hayes of Hampton. Jay loved his family and is survived by his wife of 50 years, Reba S. Hayes; daughters, Wanda Annette Burgamy and her husband John of Nags Head, NC and Yvonne Hayes Hodges and her husband Bernie of Hampton; sisters, Cam Murray and Bridget Joyner both of Hampton; two special grandchildren, Zoe Calvert and Taylor Weaver; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. The family will receive friends from 5-6:30 PM Tonight at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home in downtown Hampton. A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 PM Tomorrow at First Friends Church, 1062 Big Bethel Rd. in Hampton. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park. The family wishes to give a special thanks to the doctors and nurses at Riverside Hospital in ICU and CCU; the fourth floor staff at Riverside Rehab; Dr. Anthony Fisher and his staff for the many years of good care. A scholarship for a Hampton High School graduate is being established in Jay's name for anyone who wishes to donate, in lieu of flowers. The information will be made available after the funeral.
