IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Olga O.
Simmonds
May 14, 1920 – March 2, 2025
Olga Orwilda Simmonds, 104, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 2, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Born on May 14, 1920, in Pedro Miguel, Canal Zone in the Republic of Panama, she was the seventh of eight children born to Prince Alfred Sealey and Beatrice Parris. Her parents migrated to Panama from St. Michaels, Barbados, in 1904, in search of a better life during the construction of the Panama Canal.
Prince Alfred Sealey was employed as a "Flagman" for the Panama Canal Railroad Company. He died tragically while working when he was struck by a speeding vehicle while holding a stop sign at a railroad crossing. Following his death, Beatrice was forced to return to Barbados in 1935 with the minor children, including Olga.
In Barbados, Olga met, fell in love with, and married Marcus Hinkson in 1937, and they had two daughters, Shirley and Monica. Upon Marcus' death in 1942, Olga moved to Trinidad and worked in a sewing factory, then later in the capital city Port of Spain, in a U.S. Navy laundry facility during World War II. She returned to Panama in 1945, where she worked as a cashier in the commissary for over ten years on the Canal Zone. She married Leon E. Simmonds in 1958 and later immigrated to the United States in 1959 to live in New York City. Olga worked hard and held various positions, including as a certified home health care worker. She retired in 1984, and she and Leon moved to Hampton to be close to her daughter Monica and grandchildren. It was then, at the age of 65, that she learned how to drive. Through the years, she attended both St. Mark's Episcopal Church and St. Cyprian's Episcopal Church. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed crocheting and sewing.
Preceded in death by both husbands and her daughter, Shirley E. Hinkson, she leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Monica Mottley (Gilberto); grandchildren, Darrell Mottley (Tanya), Ray Mottley (Lasonja), Shawn Mottley (Linda), and Craig Mottley (Kim Chapman); great-grandchildren, Carolyn Jones (Ryan), Clayton Mottley, Ryan Mottley (Kathryn), Lauren Mottley (Tyler Knickerbocker), and David Mottley; great-great-grandchildren, Arthur Jones, Riley Mottley, and Kaiden Mottley; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 12:30 PM, Friday, March 7, 2025, at St. Cyprian's Episcopal Church, Hampton, with a visitation at the church an hour before from 11:30-12:30. Interment will follow at Hampton Memorial Gardens.
