IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Norine
Verlander
June 5, 1923 – September 21, 2022
Hattie Norine Verlander, 99, died Wednesday, September 21, 2022. Born in Surry County on June 5, 1923 to Hattie Mae and George Wesley Peck, she was a longtime Fox Hill resident where she was the oldest member of Wallace Memorial United Methodist Church. She remained very active in the life of the church by cooking for church suppers and participating in the prayer shawl ministry until the COVID shutdown and her health made it too difficult to attend. She loved quilting and had made a quilt for each of her children and grandchildren and baby quilts for her great-grandchildren. When quilting became too much, she began crocheting and made doilies for anyone who visited her and for those she visited. She hosted family holiday gatherings at her house until she was 96. Blooming flowers and cacti always brought her joy.
Preceded in death by her husband, George F. Verlander; Norine is survived by her daughters, Jeanette Schrum, Sandra Ballard, and Brenda Strickland; a sister, Ruby Johnson; eight grandchildren, Dan, Stephanie, Trip, Dara, Jamie, Jeremy, Jason, and JR; thirteen great-grandchildren, Alex, Brittnie, Parker, Katelyn, Andruw, Jay, Skylar, Amy, Mary, Natalie, Carter, Julia, and Parker; and three great-great-grandchildren, PJ, Layla, and MJ.
The family will receive friends from 11-12 Saturday, September 24, 2022 at Wallace Memorial United Methodist Church with a funeral service beginning at noon. Interment will follow in Clark Cemetery. Both the service and the interment may be viewed live by clicking HERE . Friends are invited to join the family for lunch at the church following the interment.
Memorials may be made to Wallace Memorial UMC or a charity of your choice.
