IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Nell Scoggin
Gerringer
September 6, 1928 – September 23, 2022
Nell Scoggin Gerringer was born to Julia M. and Lacy L. Scoggin in Garner, NC on September 6, 1928 and died on September 23, 2022 in Williamsburg, VA.
Nell moved to the Peninsula in 1932 and married Jesse Earl Gerringer in January 1957, who preceded her in death in June 2010. She was a longtime and dedicated member of West Hampton Baptist Church. She graduated from Newport New High School in 1946 and attended Newport News Business College before her employment as Secretary to the Newport News Heath Officer, and soon thereafter with the Department of the Army at Fort Monroe. During her 35-year civil service career she held numerous positions ending her tenure as a desk officer in the Foreign Military Program.
After retiring, Nell volunteered with Contact Peninsula as a telephone worker and rape counselor and the afterschool reading program at Wythe Elementary School. Retirement allowed time for crossword puzzles, reading, and her attempts at water skiing, bowling, golf, and tennis—none of which she excelled, but thoroughly enjoyed.
Nell and Earl were the proud parents of their daughter, Gaye McClung, who delighted them with the birth of two very special grandchildren with whom they spent many joyous times. Sadly, Earl died before the arrival of their equally special great grandchildren.
Nell was second oldest of a large and close-knit family. She was preceded in death by her husband and parents; her brothers Vance (Phyllis), Lonnie (Dena), Hubert, Lacy, and Ernest; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Raymond (Pauline) Gerringer, Hugh (Nita) Gerringer, Harper (Ruth)Gerringer, and Carr (Marie) Gerringer. She is survived by her daughter, Gaye McClung; granddaughter and her husband, Julia and Pete Ferrintino; grandson and his wife, Harper and Meredith McClung; great grandchildren, Blair and Emily Ferrintino and Will McClung; her sisters and husband, Elsie "Jenny" and Frank Culbreath and Eunice "Sallie" and James "Jimmy" Shires; and a host of nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, October 1, 2022, at West Hampton Baptist Church at 11am. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Williamsburg Hospice House to honor this extraordinary life.
