Nancy Taylor Holtzclaw Schappert peacefully left this life on August 1, 2023 at the Transitions LifeCare Hospice Home in Raleigh, NC. Nancy Taylor, as she was known to family and friends, was born on July 24,1940 to Taylor Selden and Nan Moore Holtzclaw in the Buxton Hospital in Newport News.
Nancy is preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Frances Ann Shuford, and daughter Karen Moore Schappert. She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Herman Robert (Bob) Schappert, daughter, Susan Elizabeth Harper (Jim); grandchildren, Jimmy Harper (Staci), Madison Motte (Hunter), Bobby Harper (Brianna) and Emma Harper.
Nancy was raised in Hampton Baptist Church, where in 1963 she and Bob were married. She was a proud graduate of Hampton High School, Class of 1958, and nurtured her lifelong friendships through reunions and weekly zoom gatherings when miles separated them. She attended Madison College and was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Hygiene. She interrupted her career in Dental Hygiene to be Mom to Susan and Karen. She led their Girl Scout Brownie Troop and spent summers helping at swim meets at the James River Country Club.
She joined Bob as a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Newport News where she sang in the choir, served on the Church Council, Altar Guild and taught Sunday School. She was a member of the James River Garden Club and sustaining member of the Junior League of Hampton Roads.
She trained her Sheltie "Lucy" to be a Certified Therapy Dog and for 10 years brought smiles, calm and courage to countless children as part of CHKD's Buddy Brigade and library "Paws To Read" programs.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 am, Saturday, August 5, 2023 at Trinity Lutheran Church with interment to follow in Peninsula Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Friday from 5-6:30 pm at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, 245 S. Armistead Ave, Hampton.
Memorial donations can be made to the Trinity Lutheran Church Organ Fund or Children's Hospital of the Kings Daughters in Norfolk, Va.
