IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Nancy R.
Eure
May 13, 1936 – February 16, 2026
Nancy Rountree Eure left this earth and went to be with the Lord on February 16, 2026. Nancy was born on May 13, 1936 in Suffolk, Virginia to Ned and Mozelle Rountree. She grew up in Hobbsville, North Carolina, an only child, and feisty and fun, a member of both the Elvis Fan Club and the Tony Bennett Fan Club, a guard on the Hobbsville High School basketball team, and valedictorian of her class when she graduated from Hobbsville High School. Nancy was forced to grow up quickly when her father, Ned, the owner of a general store in Hobbsville, passed away when she was only 15 years old.
Nancy always loved animals and would turn the goats and chickens her parents raised into pets, talking to them like they were her friends. Nancy loved all animals and was quick to feed any swan, squirrel, or bird she saw. Lacy, her pet dog, was Nancy's baby in her final years, and she loved nothing more than to pretty Lacy up with bows. Everywhere Nancy went, Lacy had to go with her.
When Nancy graduated from high school, she was ready to spread her wings and anxious to go to the city. She decided she would go to Peace College, an all girls' college in Raleigh, North Carolina. Nancy felt too far from home in Raleigh, so after one year at Peace College, she moved to Chowan College in Murfreesborough, North Carolina to be closer to home. Ironically, Nancy had always wanted to move out of the small town of Hobbsville, North Carolina, but she loved her family so fiercely, she couldn't wander too far away.
Shortly after graduating from Chowan College, Nancy married Lin Eure at the Hobbsville Baptist church on a blazing hot day in August, 1956. Lin and Nancy had dated since high school. Lin was a year older than Nancy and had joined the Air Force after graduating high school and briefly attended Chowan College himself, but he found time to get back to Chowan and take Nancy out for dates. They married when Nancy was only 20 years old and were each other's constant companions from then on. After marriage, they moved to Hampton, where they bought a home and raised their family. They had been married 69 years and were working on their 70th anniversary when Nancy went to heaven.
After marrying Lin, Nancy had three children. Her oldest son, Gregg Rountree Eure, married to Lisa, her middle son, Eldon Todd Eure, married to Dorrie, and her youngest son, Brett Darren Eure. Nancy delighted in her grandchildren, Corey, Erin, Margaret, Rachael, and Isabelle. She loved being a great grandmother to Gracie, Averi, Blakely, and Chance. Nothing made Nancy happier than being around children. To her children, her grandchildren, and her great grandchildren, Nancy was simply known as "Nanny."
Nancy turned her love of children into a lifelong career as a kindergarten teacher. She first fell in love with teaching at Buckroe Baptist Church where she taught first grade. Soon after becoming a teacher at Buckroe Baptist, Nancy decided to go back to school and get a Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education from Old Dominion University. Always the consummate learner, she then went on to take night courses, while teaching full time and raising a family, to earn her Master's Degree from Old Dominion University, just a few credits shy of a PHD.
Outside of raising her family, teaching was Nancy's passion. Nancy taught kindergarten classes at Langley Elementary School for 32 years at Langley Elementary and was a celebrity among her students. She would sometimes go to former students' graduation parties, where she would be treated like a star. Her fellow teachers knew Nancy as someone who would take charge at the same time that she took you under her wing. She was a force of love in the classroom and among her family. After she retired, Nancy enjoyed trips to Disney World, Myrtle Beach, time with family, and friends. Nancy touched so many lives on her time on earth and will be sorely missed by the many who loved her.
The family will receive friends at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home on Saturday, February 28, 2026 from 12-1PM. A funeral service will begin at 1PM with interment in Hampton Memorial Gardens following immediately after.
