Maylo Gillis (Mac) MacDonald, Jr., age 82, passed away on Wednesday, September 23, 2015 after a long battle with cancer in Hampton, VA. Born in Boston, MA on March 20, 1933, he never lost his affection for the city of his birth. An Air Force veteran of 22 years, he served his country with distinction in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars while raising five children with his beloved wife of 54 years, Ann. He is sorely missed. Maylo saw the world while serving, touching down on every continent. In his later years he followed his children's and grandchildren's travels with fascination. After retiring as a Senior Master Staff Sergeant, Maylo entered construction and many buildings in Tidewater and on Ft. Monroe contain his handiwork. Maylo was preceded in death by his wife Ann MacDonald, his parents Maylo and Annabelle MacDonald, and several siblings. Left to honor his memory are his sister Mary Kintner, brother John Robert (Helen) MacDonald, sister Bridget (Larry) Herman, daughter Catherine (John) MacDonald, her sons Samuel and Jacob Ulmschneider; son Maylo Joseph MacDonald; daughter Leslie Ratigan, her daughters Jessica and Meghan, and grandson Caleb; Janet (Frank) MacDonald and her son Simon; son Richard and his son Jonathan, as well as many nephews and nieces. Funeral services will be held at his graveside at 2:00 PM, Saturday, October 10, 2015 at Parklawn Memorial Park. Funeral arrangements are by R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home. Memorials may be made in Maylo's name to the Peninsula Food Bank or a charity of your choice. The family will receive friends following the graveside service at the Hampton Inn, 3103 Coliseum Drive, Hampton. Those who wish to come should go to the Langley Peninsula Room when they arrive.
