Obituary

Maxine Wood Newsome, 74, died Friday, July 25, 2014 at her daughter's home following a battle with cancer. Born in Phoebus, she was a lifelong Hampton resident and a member of Buckroe Baptist Church where she served as a deacon and loved to sing in the choir. She retired from Old Point National Bank in 1995 after 26 years of service. She was a Red Hat Lady and she loved dining out with friends, but most of all, she loved spending time with her family. Preceded in death by her loving husband, Walter J. Newsome, Jr.; left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Karen Alvis and her husband, Greg; her son, Walter J. Newsome, III and his wife, Caren VanArsdale; her grandchildren, Lauren, Kimberly, Kyle, Wally, Maxwell, and Mya; her brother, Charlie E. Wood, Jr. and his wife, Jovonna; and her sister-in-law, Gayle Newsome. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM, Monday, July 28, 2014 at Buckroe Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 3:30-5:00 PM Sunday at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home.
