MSgt. Matthew James Byrne, (USAF Ret.) passed away Tuesday, August 11, 2015. Born in Rantoul, IL, he has been a resident of Hampton for 15 years. He currently worked in the Admissions Department at Eastern State Hospital. Matt retired from the U.S. Air Force in 2000 after 22 years of service to his country. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Buckroe, Knights of Columbus Council #511 where he was a fourth degree Knight, the John F. Kennedy Assembly and the Disabled American Veterans. Matt was preceded in death by his father John Byrne and brother, Paul. He is survived by his wife of 20 years; daughter, Michelle Byrne; son, Michael Byrne; mother, Doris C. Byrne; and brothers, John, Andrew and James Byrne. The family will receive friends from 4-5:00 PM Sunday at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home in downtown Hampton. At 5:00 PM the Holy Rosary will be prayed. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church by Rev. Msgr. Walter Barrett.
