Obituary

Mary Jennie Aufiero Scotti died Thursday, October 17, 2013. Born November 17, 1925 in Cambridge, MA, she lived in numerous places in the United States and around the world as an Army spouse. In fact, Mary was a tri-service mother. Her son was delivered by a Navy doctor, one daughter by an Army doctor, and an Air Force doctor delivered the other daughter. Ultimately Mary made Hampton her home, and resided there for the last 50 years.

She was an active member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, volunteering with the food pantry and soup kitchen, and assisted with Hampton Ecumenical Lodging and Provisions (HELP). In her leisure time Mary enjoyed gambling, whether it was playing Bingo, the slots at Dover Downs, or scratch tickets. She also enjoyed sewing and shopping.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Michael and Dora Aufiero, her sisters, Gloria Osterlund and Deliah Carvahlo, and her brother, James Aufiero. She is survived by her husband, Stephen G. Scotti; her son, Stephen G. Scotti, Jr. and his wife, Julia of Scottsdale, AZ; her daughters, Stephanie Scotti and her husband, John Frackoviak of Chapel Hill, NC and Leilani Scotti-Powell and her husband, George H. Powell, Jr. of Poquoson VA; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A frequently heard comment by each of her various caretakers since her death is, "I was there to care for her, but she would ask me to sit next to her and tell her my life story. These conversations have shaped my future." She was a good friend, an excellent mother, and a person of great strength and courage. She will be missed by many.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 2:00 PM, Monday, October 21, 2013 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church by Rev. Sean Prince, Msgr. Robert Perkins, and Rev. Robert French. The family will receive friends prior to the mass, beginning at 1:00 PM, and at a reception in the church commons following the Mass.

Memorials may be made to the Immaculate Conception Food Pantry, 2150 Cunningham Drive, Hampton, VA 23666.
