Mary Martina Makowski, a beloved educator and devoted servant of her faith and community, passed away peacefully on February 27, 2026, at the age of 87.  Born on January 30, 1939, Mary dedicated her life to nurturing young minds as an educator in the York County Public Schools, where she touched countless lives during her years teaching at Grafton Bethel Elementary School. Her commitment to education was reflected in her academic achievements, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Notre Dame and a Master of Education from Old Dominion University.

Those who knew Mary will never forget the way her beautiful blue eyes seemed to light up every room she entered. She had a gift for making everyone around her feel seen, welcome, and loved. A kind and gentle soul, Mary was a devout Roman Catholic whose faith was the guiding light of her life.

Mary is survived by her sisters, Brona Jones and Cathy Makowski, and her brother, Augustine Makowski, as well as a cherished circle of nieces and nephews who will carry her memory in their hearts forever.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 AM on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Hampton, Virginia. Mary will be laid to rest at Saint Dominic's Roman Catholic Cemetery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

She was dearly loved and will be deeply missed. May she rest in eternal peace.
