Obituary

Jaffeux, Mary Elizabeth Webster, a longtime resident of Hampton since 1943, the matriarch of the Jaffeux family, completed her earthly journey on September 23, 2016, just 90 minutes shy of her 85th birthday. She is reunited in heaven with her husband of 47 years, Paul Andrew; her parents, Emma Lou and Clarence Webster; her grandfather and grandmother, William and Martha Garner; great aunt, Marie Lamothe, and beloved sister, Ella Mae Trull. She is survived by her five children, Paul Gilbert, Wayne (Jannett), Martha Ann Goodenough, Brenda Sue Lowe, and Thomas (Amanda); 15 loving grandchildren, 13 beautiful great-grandchildren, and 10 loving great-great-grandchildren; and many special nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sister, Betty Jean Taylor, and sister-in-law, Margaret Jones, Wadesboro, N.C..

The family will greatly miss her nature and strong personality, her potato salad, and deviled eggs at our Christmas gatherings and family reunions.

She was an avid lover of sewing for her daughters and grandchildren over the years. Many family members and friends were fortunate to receive a crocheted afghan, also called a "throw". Many veterans at the Hampton and Richmond Veteran Hospital received handmade lap blankets. Mary 's prize was her Afghan Project in 1988 when she crocheted the Red, White and Blue Bedspread for the 50th Anniversary of the 82nd Airborne, a gift to her husband, Paul.

Mary was truly a champion for veterans. She enjoyed her membership with the Hampton Roads 82nd Airborne Association, charter member, and in the year 2000 and 2002 she was honored as the 82nd Airborne Woman of the Year. Her pride and joy each year was attending the All American Week at Fort Bragg, N.C. to honor the graduating Paratrooper Class, with her husband Paul.

Her other contributions to veterans was as a member of the Disabled American Veterans Association Auxiliary (Chapter 6) in Hampton. For many years she volunteered as a trained hospice caregiver at Hampton's Veterans Hospital. She was recognized for her 2,500 hours of service to veterans. The Spinal Cord unit at the veterans hospital benefited from her weekly visitation. She treated the veterans like extended family. She also loved the Valentine for Veterans, Memorial Day, and Fourth of July Picnics.

Mary was a proud devoted member of Ivy Memorial Baptist Church, where she served on many committees. She was a faithful member of the Joyful Gleaners Sunday School Class, where she served as its treasurer and group leader. The church's food pantry was her pride and joy, she loved shopping and gathering donations with her friend, Helen Quinn.

The family requests memorial contributions in the form of nonperishable food items be brought to the service for the Ivy Memorial Food Pantry or memorial contributions may be made to the Ivy Memorial Church Food Pantry fund.

A funeral service conducted by Dr. Brian Williams, Pastor, will be held Wednesday, September 28, 2016 at 11AM at Ivy Memorial Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens.
