Mary Jane Bowman passed away this past Monday, January 4th at the Consulate Health Care Nursing Home in Newport News at the age of 96. Mary Jane, known as "Perk" by both family and close friends was a lifelong Hampton Resident and was a member of Memorial Baptist Church, Hampton. She grew up a KRABBA, and was a member of the Hampton High School Cheerleading squad in 1936. After High School she briefly lived in Washington DC. She was a very proud member of the BETA SIGMA PHI Sorority and loved her sisters dearly. She was President of the Robert E. Lee Elementary School PTA. She worked feverishly with her husband, Adron Bowman at the Red Ox Restaurant in Hampton, and eventually working with the Public Library System in Hampton, mainly at Charles H. Taylor Library where she retired. She was very fond of the Library. She adored all the members in the family being fond to all her nieces and nephews both here and afar. Two in particular, Hope and Marilyn, who she more than likely took on as her own daughters. She was very much appreciative for all they did for her throughout the years, but more so loved them dearly. She was a devoted Wife and Mother driving countless hours all over town taking her son to football and wrestling practices. She was preceded in death by her first husband Grover Futrell and then by her late husband, Adron Bowman of 18 years. Her Brothers Bill Cathell, Dothan, AL. Walter E. Cathell, Baltimore MD., Virginia Chapell, Hampton VA AND Olive Blanchard, Newport News. She is survived by her son, John Taylor Bowman and his wife Jennifer, here in Hampton and also her sister Dickie Southall, Hampton VA. She was KRABBA born and KRABBA bred, now, she's dancing in heaven with her 2 daughters. A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 AM, Friday, January 8, 2016 at Parklawn Memorial Park.
