Obituary

Mary Jane Bittenbender, 98, died May, 10, 2017 at home surrounded by her family. A longtime resident of Hampton, she had worked for years at St. Vincent and St. Mary's Star of the Sea School as a teacher. Mary was a devoted member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. She was also active in numerous civic organizations including the Lady Lions, Daughters of the American Revolution, Catholic Daughters, Night Cappers, and the Daughters of the Confederacy.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband of over 60 years, Edward H. Bittenbender and her sons, William B. Bittenbender and David R. Bittenbender. Survivors include her children, Catherine Curtin, Charles Bittenbender, Mary Hugh Bittenbender, Edward H. Bittenbender Jr., Myron J. Bittenbender; brother, Joseph H. McCaffrey, twenty-two grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Berniece Wiggins, who provided extraordinary care for Mary, as well as to the entire St. Joseph Catholic Church community for the care and compassion they showed to the family.

Celebrate a mass will be held on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at 11AM at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hampton VA.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church General Fund or to a charity of your choice.

Arrangements are by R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home.
