IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Martin Page
Reade
February 21, 1942 – January 19, 2026
Martin Page Reade, son, husband, father, brother, uncle, and mentor to many, passed away peacefully on January 19, 2026, at the age of 83. He was born February 21, 1942, in Nassawadox, Virginia, to Page and Mabel Reade, and grew up in Melfa on Virginia's Eastern Shore. A graduate of Onancock High School, he told his principal he would retire by age 40, a goal he later achieved. He continued his education at the Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School, served in the U.S. Army, and later worked for the United States Postal Service. Guided by an entrepreneurial spirit, Martin founded Marcell Industries International in 1979. Its success allowed him to fulfill his promise of early retirement when he left the USPS in 1981 at age 39. He mentored many in business ownership and encouraged others to create financial independence for their families. He earned the respect of both mentors and those he mentored. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Martin took pride in living a life rooted in purpose and independence. He savored his personal freedom with his family, loved America and all things patriotic, often tearing up while listening to "God Bless the USA." His collection of flag polo shirts, hats, decor and even his red Cadillac became legendary, as did his love of the Yankees, Commanders, Fox News, and spirited political and sports debates, with a Coca-Cola nearby. The Eagle was his spirit animal.. He was usually the only field trip dad, a title he was proud of! A walking sports encyclopedia, Martin could recall legendary games in remarkable detail, many of which he attended. He recalled chance encounters with notable figures, including Buddy Holly, Little Richard, Mickey Mantle, Lee Iacocca, Suzanne Somers, Evander Holyfield, and David Copperfield. Family often joked that he had nine lives and was always proud to help others, whether by giving away a car, helping someone through school, or supporting charitable organizations such as Tunnel to Towers, Wounded Warrior Project, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, and the Peninsula Foodbank. Martin married Susie Whisnant Reade in 1972. He proudly supported her at school events during her teaching career, becoming a familiar presence. Their strong marriage and love of family were evident to all who knew them. Even after her passing in 2023, he spoke of her daily.
Martin was also preceded in death by his parents, his stepmother Lucy, and his beloved grandparents who helped shape his life. He and Susie are survived by daughter, Kara Reade Gomez; son-in-law, Jose Gomez; and grandchildren, Cruz and Lola, who lovingly shared every day of the last two and a half years living with him. He is also survived by his loving sister, Sharon Reade Gladden; two step-siblings; his cherished niece, Rinda Albert (Marty); and many other nieces, nephews, and friends who were like family.
A celebration of life will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, tax-deductible memorial contributions may be made in his honor to the Susie W. Reade Library Fund (www.susiewreadelibraryfund.com), which supports projects for the Hampton City Public Libraries.
