Obituary

Martha Jean Norman passed away on Saturday, October 13, 2018. Martha was born in Akron, Ohio to John F. Norman and Betty Andrews Norman. She grew up in Sparta, North Carolina. Ms. Norman graduated from Mars Hill Jr. College and then from Meredith College with a  degree in math. She came to Hampton, Virginia in the early 1950's to work at NACA (now NASA) as a mathematician at the time when NACA was hiring women to perform mathematical calculations. She worked there until her retirement.

Martha was a long time member of Hampton Baptist Church, where she served in many capacities. She remained an active member of the Ammie Garber/Barbara Chandler Missions Group until her death. She frequently participated in baking for receptions, stitching Chrismons, and visiting church members. Martha had a passion and talent for baking and beautifully decorating cakes. She generously shared that gift as she decorated cakes for children and adults. She was a past member of the American Association of University Women. Later in her life, as she resided at the Devonshire, she delighted in distributing candy and goodies to other residents.

Ms. Norman is survived by a niece, Tammy Campbell, and a nephew, Greg Norman, both of North Carolina, and several great nieces and nephews.  A service to honor her memory will be held on Sunday, October 21, 2018 at Hampton Baptist Church at 3:00 pm. Dr. Chester L. Brown will officiate. A reception will follow at the church.
Memorials may be made to Hampton Baptist Church, 40 King's Way, Hampton, VA 23669.
