Marie T. Nixon, 91, died Tuesday, July 2, 2014. She was a lifelong resident of Hampton, and a graduate of the Hampton High School class of 1941. Marie worked at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard during World War II, and then worked at Hampton High School for 23 years, retiring as a Main Office secretary. After she retired Marie assisted with the breakfast program at Hines Middle School until she was 83. She was a former member of Memorial Baptist Church and Riverdale Baptist Church. Marie was preceded in death by husband Joseph B. Nixon; parents, Emma Mae and Andrew Turner; two brothers, Frankie and Randolph Turner; and sister, Josie Mae Elliott. Marie is survived by her; children, James W. Nixon and Gail N. Mongold (Donald); grandchildren, Susan Mongold (Anthony), Anne Trueblood (Billy), and Tina Bryner (Trevor); great-grandchildren, Ryan Bryner, Marissa Bryner, Jordan Trueblood, William Trueblood, and Seth Wells; special niece, Joyce Geluz; and 3 cats, Nana, Boots, and Dakota. She suffered from shingles for 7 years and was passionate that anyone who was eligible, get the vaccine. We could not have had a better mother. The family will receive friends Sunday from 3-5 PM at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, in Hampton. A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 AM, Monday at Parklawn Memorial Park, Hampton.
