Margaret Holland Parrish, known by her grandchildren as "Grandma Ace", died on September 11, 2014 after a short illness. She was 87 years old and lived in Hampton, VA. Born August 3, 1927 in Surry County, VA. , her parents were Reginald D. Holland and Leila S. Holland. She grew up in Surry, VA, and was a graduate of William and Mary College. Upon graduation, she worked as the Chief Financial Officer for the Fort Monroe Commissary, and then as a Finance Officer for the Post Engineers until her retirement. While at Fort Monroe she met and married James E. Parrish, husband of 42 years and had two children, James E. Parrish and Nancy Ann Parrish. Margaret was very active in the VFW and American Legion for many years. She was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church of Hampton. She volunteered and prepared taxes for the AARP Tax Program, was a 2000 census taker, and was an election officer for the Buckroe voting precinct. After retirement from Fort Monroe, Margaret's heart and time was devoted to her volunteer work at the clothing room at the VA Medical Center in Hampton, where in June 2014 she received a certificate for 11,947 hours and 16 years of volunteer service to veterans. She enjoyed her many friends at the Legion and her wonderful neighbors on Corey Circle. Although at times stubborn, she was a true soft spoken Virginia woman and will be missed by all who knew and loved her. She was predeceased by her husband James in August 1995 and daughter Nancy February 1979, also brothers Dennis, Russell and Gordon Holland. Her son James Parrish of Oklahoma City, two grandchildren Megan and Wiley Parrish of Oklahoma City, daughter-in-law Vera C. Parrish of Oklahoma City, and sister Louise DeBolt of Newport News survive her. A memorial service will be held at RH Smith Funeral Home, 245 S. Armistead Ave, Hampton, VA.
