IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Margaret Waggoner
"Maggie" Young
February 9, 1915 – September 1, 2016
Maggie Young went joyfully home to heaven on Thursday, September 1, 2016. She was preceded in death by her parents, her three siblings and her husband, Malcolm M. Young (LTC, USAF Ret), who died in 1980. She is survived by her children Molly, Katie and Rob and her grandchildren Arthur, Amanda and Robbie, as well as her great-grandson Tyler.
Maggie was born Feb 9, 1915 in Peoria, IL. She graduated from Iowa State University in 1936 and worked for the National Dairy Council before joining the Women's Army Auxiliary Army Corps (WAAC) in July 1942. She served for the duration of WWII and was one of the first women to attend Command and General Staff College in residence. She then used the GI Bill to obtain an MS at Columbia University. Maggie worked as a home economist for Swift and Co Meat Packers and hosted a local TV program in New York City starting in 1947. Because Mac was recalled to active duty for the Korean War, Maggie then served as an Air Force wife, raising their children around the world and in several states.
Maggie loved her Lord, her church and her country. She spent many years as a prayer warrior and Bible teacher. She taught two Bible studies a week, prayed each week with the staff of her church and of International Cooperating Ministries (ICM), and was always available with wise counsel. She served for several years on the Finance Committee of her church, she served monthly as a Prayer Team member for the congregation and participated in the Peninsula Healing Rooms and she was active in the PTA when her children were in school. She was recognized in 2007 by the General Assembly of Virginia for her many civic contributions and ICM dedicated a church they built in India in honor of her 90th birthday. The ICM staff and prayer team also dedicated a church in Uganda in her memory.
A memorial service will be conducted at 1:00 PM, Saturday, October 8, 2016 at New Covenant Church by Pastor Mark Johansson and Pastor Steve Deane. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to New Covenant Church Missions Fund, to ICM or to a charity of your choice.
