Born as the fifth of six children to Lorena and Lee Ellett on June 30, 1925, in Midlothian, Virginia, she graduated as valedictorian from Grange Hall High School in Midlothian and attended Mary Washington College for two years. She then moved to Richmond where she met William Councill of Hampton, and they were married on June 16, 1951. After living briefly in Springfield, IL, they settled in Hampton, where they lived for almost fifty years. They spent the last decade of their life together as residents of The Chesapeake in Newport News. Besides being a wife to Bill and mother to their two daughters, Margaret served her community and church in various capacities as a PTA officer, election judge, Sunday School teacher, Girls' Auxiliary leader, Women's Missionary Union officer, and librarian at Memorial Baptist Church in Hampton. She also worked for many years as the bookkeeper for the Billy James Company. Margaret was the last surviving member of her generation of the Ellett family. Her beloved husband, Bill, and her son-in-law, William Stuntz, predeceased her. She is survived by her daughters, Ruth Smith and her husband, The Honorable Herman J. Smith, Jr., of Medford, MA, and Carol Ahlquist and her husband, Dr. Mark Ahlquist, of Olivia, MN; her grandchildren Sarah Stuntz, Samuel Cook-Stuntz and his wife Elizabeth, and Andrew Stuntz, all of greater Boston, MA; Joel Ahlquist and his wife Elizabeth of Cincinnati, OH, Rebekah Howell and her husband Kevin of Jataity, Paraguay, Caleb Ahlquist of Eden Prairie, MN, and Isaac Ahlquist and his wife Amy of Mounds View, MN; great-grandchildren Coralaine and Adelaide Ahlquist, and Micah, Alicia, Lydia, and Liam Howell; and many nieces and nephews throughout Virginia. A memorial service will be held at Memorial Baptist Church, 324 Newport News Ave., Hampton, on Saturday, November 8, at 1 PM, followed by a repast in the church fellowship hall. The burial service will be on Monday, November 10, at 11 AM at Clark Cemetery, 123 Beach Rd., Fox Hill, Hampton. All are welcome to attend.
