Mamie Sweeney Smith, 89, died Sunday, March 20, 2016. A native of Beckley, WV, our coalminer's daughter was one of seventeen children. She graduated from Pax High School where she played basketball and was on a championship team. Her love of Big Band music and dancing led to her convince her high school to buy a juke box for their cafeteria. In her younger days she was a dance instructor with Arthur Murray Studios. Mamie crocheted with great skill and enjoyed shopping and watching movies.
Preceded in death by her husband, Dwight E. Smith, Sr.; survivors include her five sons, Dwight E. Smith, Jr. and his wife, Joan of Williamsburg, Gary W. Smith of Hampton, Martin D. Smith and his wife, Margie of Yorktown, Jay W. Smith of Sandston, and Roger B. Smith of Newport News.; six grandchildren, Sheri, Traci, Sandi, Taylor, Jessica, and Kyle; and four great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 AM, Thursday, March 24, 2016 at Peninsula Memorial Park.
