Mabel C. Jones, 85, passed away on Tuesday, March 31. She attended Radford College and studied mathematics. In 1948, she took a civil service exam and entered government service at the National Advisory Committee on Aeronautics (NACA) with the job title of computer. There she met and, on April 28, 1950, married Jim Joe Jones to whom she was married for 61 years until his death in 2011. During the 1970's she worked in Hampton City Schools, much of that time at Phillips Elementary as the school secretary. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim J. Jones and her sister, Retha Crouse Blaha. She is survived by three children: Nancy King of Hampton, Thomas Jones (Diane) of Norton Shores, Michigan and Robert Jones (Susan) of Raleigh, North Carolina; seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and four nieces and two nephews. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Hampton since moving to Hampton. Visitation with the family will be Friday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held in the sanctuary of First Presbyterian at 2:00 PM on Saturday, April 4. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to First Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund. The family wishes to thank the staff of the Devonshire and the staff of the fifth floor of Sentara Careplex Hospital.
