Luther J. Jones, Jr, died Tuesday, May 12, 2015.A native of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Luther had been a Hampton resident since 1973. He served first in the Navy earning a Silver Star in the battle of Normandy, then in the Army serving in Korea and then Vietnam where he earned the Soldiers Medal for saving the lives of 60 people in a bridge collapse. He went on to serve in the Merchant Marines until retiring. Luther was preceded in death by his wife, Nora; parents, Luther and Eva; a sister, three children, and three great-grandchildren. He is survived by a son, Bobby Goodman; eight grandchildren, fifteen grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren; a sister, Mary Ann; and extended family, Connie and Lloyd Andrews, and Susan. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 PM, Saturday, May 16, 2015 at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home 245 S. Armistead Ave, Hampton by Pastor David Pace with interment to follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Saturday before the service from 1-2 at the funeral home. Luther requested that any memorial contributions be sent to Langley Baptist Church, where he had been a longtime member.
