Lucille Johnson Chappell, 98, passed away on Monday, February 6, 2023.  Lucy was born in Suffolk on February 8, 1924 to her late parents Elmer and Viola Johnson. She was a military wife, often traveling the world with her family after marrying her husband, George H. Chappell in 1944.  She loved to be outdoors and was passionate about her yard.

Preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 57 years, George Harrison Chappell; her sons, Wallace H. Chappell and George Harrison Chappell, Jr.; and her three sisters and three brothers. Lucy is survived by her daughter Linda C. Hancock; her son Robert W. Chappell (Margo); daughter-in-law Naomi Chappell; five grandchildren (Doug, Robert Jr. (Sabrina), Meredith, Bradley and Rebecca (Taylor)); ten great-grandchildren (Brandon, Jacob, Madison, Caleb, Bryce, Cheyanne, Marley, Brayden, Kaylee, and Chloe); three nieces (Barbara Jones, Shirley Glass, Gayle Earnest) and their families.

A graveside service will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, February 18, 2023, at St. Luke's Cemetery in Smithfield, Virginia.  The family will receive friends, prior to the service, from 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, 245 S. Armistead Avenue, Hampton, VA.
