IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Lorie Denise
Hitchler
December 31, 1963 – July 19, 2025
Lorie Denise Smith Hitchler, age 61, passed away unexpectedly on July 19, 2025.
Born on December 31, 1963, in Newport News, Virginia, Lorie was raised in Phoebus and built a life rooted in warmth, resilience, and devotion to those she loved. She dedicated over 25 years to the hospitality industry, most notably at the Hampton Inn Oceanfront, where she rose to the role of General Manager. Her colleagues and staff became a second family, and she was deeply loved and respected within the hospitality community.
Lorie was a proud grandmother who delighted in baking, caring for her many cats—and eventually, even dogs. She found joy in early morning walks on the beach, often greeting the sunrise with gratitude and peace. Known for her impeccable style, Lorie embraced life as a true fashionista and loved sharing her flair with others.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Nathaniel James Hitchler; her father, George Smith; her son, Jon Hitchler; and her grandson, Jacob Johnson.
She is survived by her mother, Barbara Clark Smith; sister, Julie Smith; brother, Billy Smith; brother David Smith; sister, Jennifer Spitzer; Janice Smith Cosgro; daughter, Heather Hitchler; daughter-in-law, Ginger Hitchler; grandchildren, Kenlie, Maddie, and Natalie; numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members; and her devoted companion, Kenneth W. Leggett.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home in Hampton, VA, beginning at 10:00 AM, followed by a chapel service at 11:00 AM. A reception celebrating Lorie's life will take place from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Hilton Garden Inn, 3315 Atlantic Ave, Virginia Beach, VA 23451.
In accordance with her wishes, Lorie will be cremated. The family kindly requests that any floral arrangements be sent in vases or live plants. In lieu of flowers, donations may also be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society.
