Obituary

Lois Simpson Sandford, 82, passed away at home on Friday, October 2nd 2015. She was preceded in death by her parents, Calvin and Mattie Simpson, and her first-born son, Philip. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Jerry; her son and daughter-in-law, Jeffery and Laura Sandford; and grandchildren Grayson and Jordan Sandford. Having been born and raised in Morehead City, NC, she always felt at home with the sand and salt of the shore. She continued that love of the beach with numerous summers in Kill Devil Hills at the Outer Banks. She treasured those moments there with friends and family. Lois also had a love of flowers, both with planting and arranging. She was an active member of the Buckroe Beach Garden Club and participated in several flower shows. The church was always a vital part of her life. For years she was a regular of St. Mark's United Methodist Church and involved with the church circles and the preparation of meals for many meetings and functions. Some of her fondest memories were the years she and her husband sponsored the Young People's League. She continued to hear from several of them through the years at Christmas time. Probably most rewarding was her participation in the Meals on Wheels program, and she looked forward to bringing hot meals and visiting with so many appreciative elderly shut-ins. Lois always had an infectious sense of humor. She was upbeat and fun to be around, even though she suffered years of chronic pain. Now at last she is free from all pain. Her family wishes to thank Dr. Brian McCormick for his unending support and comfort; Sentara Careplex, its ER and hospital staffs; and its home care, and hospice home care staffs for their professionalism, exemplary care and genuine compassion during the past two years. A memorial service will be held at St. Mark's United Methodist Church on Thursday, October 8 2015 at 11 AM. A reception will follow in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes contributions to be sent to the Youth Program at St. Mark's United Methodist Church. Arrangements are by R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home.
