Leonard Shaner Carneal, 97, died Friday August 4, 2023. He was born March 10, 1926 to the late Floyd W. Carneal, Sr. and Imogen Jeanette Carneal.  A lifelong resident of Hampton, he spent over 40 years in the banking industry, working at Merchants National Bank and eventually retiring as a Vice President with Sovran Bank in 1988.  He was a lifelong member of Central United Methodist Church in downtown Hampton . Shaner also enjoyed walking at the former Coliseum Mall and Boo Williams Facility with his wife.

Mr. Carneal was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Rena G. Carneal, his sister Evelyn C. Lamison and his brothers Floyd W. Carneal, Jr. and Richard H."Dick" Carneal.   Shaner is survived by his two daughters, Marie (Mike) Long and Laura (Chip) Holloway; grandchildren, Preston Long, Spencer Long, Krista Holloway and Meaghan Holloway; and great-grandchildren, Connor Long, Shane Long, Trey Long and Winston Long along with numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would also like to thank his caregivers at The Hidenwood, Newport News, who cared for, loved and joked with him these last few years.

The family will receive friends from 10:30-11:30 AM on Friday, August 11, 2023 at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, 245 S. Armistead Ave. in downtown Hampton.  Immediately following at 11:30 am a funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home chapel by Rev. Charles Winner, II.  Interment will follow at Peninsula Memorial Park.
