Obituary

After a hard fought battle with complications from Lymphoma, Leon passed away on Tuesday, August 28, 2018 in his home, surrounded by his family. Leon will most be remembered for his love of his family, his service in the U.S. Marine Corp and his years playing football.

Leon was preceded in death by his parents:  Leon & Audrey Sherman, and Step-Father, Jack McDaniel; his first wife, Loyce Jean and her parents, Les & Trixie Seymour; his sisters, Helen Kemery and Evelyn Mason, and most recently, his brother John Calvin Sherman.

Leon is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Marianne Barry Sherman along with his son, Steven Marshall Sherman (Melissa), his daughters Suzanne Sherman Evans and Angela Sherman Teller;  his sisters Juanita S. Hartung (Rick) and Laura Sherman, brothers & sisters in law, C. Kevin Barry (Monica), Wayne M. Barry, Dennis P. Barry (Gail), WilliamT. Barry (Nikki), Patricia B.Clark, LeRoy Kemery, Ellis Seymour (Jean), Shirley Reed and Mildred Sherman, along with 5 Grandchildren (Justin, Steven, Amber, Sheldon, and Garrison), 2 Great-Grand Children (Tripp and Tillie), 27 Nieces & Nephews and 23 Grand Nieces & Nephews.

The best memories of his school days were those proudly playing football as a Hampton High Crabber. After 4 years in the U.S. Marine Corp, Leon went on to several different professions, culminating his business career as a Greyhound Franchise Agent in Hampton, where he always served his clients with a smile on his face and provided the most efficient travel route.  After 29 years, he retired from Greyhound to stay home with "the kids", him being the biggest one!  After 5 years he became a Professional Driver with Enterprise Rent A Car, and oh the stories he could tell...  He retired once again after 8 years.

Leon was known as "The Gentle Giant" and there isn't a child who entered the room that did not automatically gravitate to him, and he became as goofy as they did.

In lieu of flowers, we ask if you choose, that you make a donation in Leon's memory to either the American Cancer Society or the National Kidney Foundation.

We would like to thank the TEAM of Doctors and Nurses at Riverside Hospital and Dr. John Kessler at Virginia Oncology for their professional and loving efforts attending to my husband's needs.  You ALL did a wonderful job. Many thanks.

A Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at 6:30 PM Thursday, September 6, 2018, in the Gymnasium of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic School by Rev. John David Ramsey.  Following Military Honors, committal will take place in the OLMC Columbarium with a reception following at St. Michaels Hall.
