IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Larry Herbie
Desseyn
September 30, 1954 – October 3, 2021
Larry "Herbie" Melvin Desseyn embarked on his final journey Sunday, October 3rd, 2021, and paddled the glorious heavenly river home. He lived his life through the strums of his guitar, calluses from a hard-day's work, handshakes with good friends, and the unconditional love for his family.
His passion for music brought joy and harmony to those around him. He could capture an audience with only a few chords and a raspy melody, and no one was a bigger groupie than his wife Irene "Renie". Herbie was an exceptional carpenter and woodworker; whether he was working on his shop, or friends' and neighbors' homes, his creativity and craftsmanship shone through in everything he touched.
Herbie had a wild and free spirit that could not be contained. He loved the great outdoors and paddled many boats in his life, as evidenced by his countless kayaks and canoes. He was a mentor, a dedicated Scout leader, and a good friend, especially when you needed him most. Herbie was a great story teller (and a long one at that) and loved sharing his knowledge with anyone who listened. He never met a stranger in his life and befriended anyone he met; they became a part of his extended family. Herbie left a lasting legacy that is hard to measure, but his memory will live on through those that knew and loved him dearly.
Herbie is survived by his beloved wife, Irene Desseyn of Hampton, VA; sons, Chad Desseyn (Natalie), Alex Donatelli (Christina), Zach Donatelli (Lori), Evan Desseyn, Joey Donatelli (Julie Boyd); grandchildren, Zoe, Ava, Draper, Delta, Jack, Luca; mother, Delores Desseyn; siblings, Lizette Russell (Ed), David Desseyn (Karen), Donald Desseyn (Marsha), Paul Desseyn (Sherri); and was preceded in death by his father, Maurice Desseyn.
A private memorial service was held for the family, but there will be a celebration of life to honor him on November 6th, at Stuft in Hampton, VA, from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm. Friends and family may drop in during this time to honor his memory.
