Hampton – Kenneth R. Alves, 59, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2016. Born Jan. 12, 1956, in Hampton, VA; he was a lifelong Peninsula resident. After graduating from school Kenny worked at the Shipyard then as a plumber in the area for many years. He joined the city of Newport News as a Codes and Compliance Inspector in 1997. Kenny had a passion for sports, especially softball and racing where he spent many hours with his son Kevin and best friends as part of the Last Minute racing team at Langley Speedway. He was preceded in death by his father Abel Alves. Kenny is survived by his daughter Crystal; and two sons, Christopher, Kevin and his wife Melissa, and their son Aidan; his mother Doris; his sister, Julia and her daughters Jennifer and Stephanie; two brothers, Russell, Michael and his wife, Annette and their two children, Torri and Zachary. A funeral service will be conducted at 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 10, at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home in Hampton. The family will receive friends from 4:30 – 6:00 immediately before the service at the funeral home. Kenny will be cremated following the services and the family will hold a private interment service.
