Obituary

Keith Curtis "Moose" Evans Keith Curtis Evans, 69, affectionately known as Moose passed away suddenly on January 12. Born in Richmond on October 2nd 1945 and was raised in Hampton. He was preceded in death by his parents J. Norwood Evans and Margaret Curtis Evans. He attended Thorpe Jr. High School and graduated from Randolph Macon Military Academy in Front Royal Va. in 1963. At an early age he developed a love for the fire service and joined Fox Hill Volunteer Fire Company. He attended Oklahoma State University and earned an Associate Degree in Fire Protection Technology. Upon his return he worked for the Newport News Fire Department from 1966 to 1972. He then went to work for the DOT civil service FD at the Yorktown Coast Guard Base and retired working at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard FD in 2000. His love of the fire service wasn't limited to his career. He joined the Phoebus Volunteer Fire Company in Hampton in the early 70's. He held several Officer ranks and is one of their past Chiefs. As of his death he had the rank of Chief Engineer emeritus and was a life member. He loved passing on his knowledge of fire pumps and he loved getting a "newbie" acclimated to becoming a pump operator. But you better have "brought your lunch" as he would say. This was one of his many "mooseisms" that kept us laughing and one of the things we loved about him. He was one of the best at being a chauffeur and took pride in it. He was also a member of Upper Middlesex VFD in Middlesex County where he continued to take care of the apparatus and pass on his knowledge. He was a member of Waterview Hunt Club in Middlesex where one of his greatest joys was to listen to the dogs run. He also loved his "doggies" at the Animal Aid Society in Hampton where he volunteered his time almost daily. He will miss them almost as much as we will miss him. He leaves to cherish his memory his Wife Cheryl, son Norwood (Michele) and grandsons Brian and Christopher and step son Jeff Walthall. The visitation is at R. Hayden Smith funeral home January 15 from 1800-1930 Funeral service will be at Fox Hill United Methodist Church on January 16th at 1100 with burial to follow at Clark memorial cemetery.
