IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Kathryn Louise
Goers
August 22, 1921 – March 14, 2019
Kathryn Louise (Lindsay) Goers passed away on March 14, 2019. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Brigadier General Melvin A. Goers (U.S.A. retired) and brothers Charles and Samuel.
Born August 22, 1921, in Urbana, Illinois, Kay was the daughter of Roscoe and Laura (Green) Lindsay. Throughout her life, she fondly remembered an idyllic childhood, filled with wonderful friends and adventures. Outgoing and popular, Kay met her future husband, Mel, when he was an Economics student and ROTC cadet at the University of Illinois. In 1941, they were married in Junction City, Kansas, when Mel was posted at Ft. Riley, Kansas. The newly married couple then embarked upon a life of service and one of a kind life experiences.
Kay's life as a military wife was filled with family and official duties, as well as world travel. The nomadic life of a military family made Kay adept at setting up comfortable homes, filled with love and her wonderful home-cooked meals, in diverse and sometime exotic locales. Her days were also filled with official duties and volunteer activities. She was especially devoted to her work as a volunteer. While in Japan during the Korean Conflict, Kay began her affiliation with The American Red Cross. After extensive training, she devoted many hours to duties at the Tokyo Army General Hospital. During 1960's, while living in Taiwan, she expanded her volunteer work to include tutoring Chinese officers and students, working on the chapel altar guild, serving as vice-president of the Officers' Wives Club, as well as continuing her relationship with the Red Cross. Kay remained an active member of the Red Cross for over 60 years. She was named Fort Monroe (Virginia) Volunteer of the Year in 2008. Her love of people also led her to donate time to the March of Dimes and Meals On Wheels. She was a dedicated mother to her four daughters, instilling in them a love of reading, creativity and animals.
Kay is survived by those daughters: Julie (Stephen) White-Hampton, Virginia, Gayle (Thomas) Hofmann-Asheville, North Carolina, Susan (Donald) Briggs-Springfield, Virginia, Nancy (William) Banta-York, Pennsylvania, as well as 6 beloved grandchildren (Amy, David and Ken Banta; Brian and Michael Briggs and Nicholas White) and 6 great-grandchildren.
Kay's family would like to express their gratitude to her physician, Dr. YuKwan Chan, the staff at Riverside Hospital, Personal Touch Hospice and Dominion Village of Poquoson for the kindness and their compassion shown our dear mother.
Funeral arrangements are being overseen by R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, 245 S. Armistead Avenue in Hampton, Virginia, 23669. Kay will be interred beside her husband at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Red Cross would be greatly appreciated.
