Obituary

Karen Denise Mason, 62, passed away on Saturday, February 14, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer. A Phoebus native, Karen was born and raised in Hampton to parents Lonnie and Sheila Shupe and graduated from Phoebus High School, Class of 1982. She truly knew everyone and could hardly go anywhere without running into someone she knew and loved.

More than anything, Karen will be remembered for her big heart, her love of conversation, and the way she made people feel welcomed and cared for. Her porch was always a place where everyone was welcome, and it was rarely empty of friends, laughter, and long conversations.

Karen was happiest when surrounded by her family and friends and especially cherished her role as "Mimi" to her grandchildren, whom she adored beyond measure. Her fur babies held a special place in her heart, and she treated them as part of the family.

Karen had a gentle soul, a kind spirit, and a deep love for the people in her life. She had a way of listening that made others feel seen and warmth that stayed with you long after you left her presence. She was deeply loved by so many and left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know her.

Preceded in death by her parents, Lonnie and Sheila Shupe; and her beloved dogs, Tara, Hershey, and Bella; Karen leaves to cherish her memory her other half of 49 years and husband of 30 years, Charles "Chuck" E. Mason, Jr.; her daughter, Crystal N. Glenn (Nicholas); her treasured grandchildren, Kingsley Glenn and Kennedy Glenn; brothers, Kevin Shupe, Stevie Shupe, and Alan Shupe (Barbi); sisters-in-law, Lisa Benson (Dan) and Julie Adams (Roger); brother-in-law, Jason Richards; numerous nieces and nephews; and a very special nephew, Daniel; her beloved best friend, Bobbie Ann; as well as her beloved dog, Carly.

A celebration of life will be held at 12 PM on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home in downtown Hampton. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 11 AM to 12 PM.
