Joyce Hogge Tysinger, a loving and devoted wife, sister, aunt, godmother, and cherished friend, peacefully passed away on July 24, 2026, at The Chesapeake Retirement Community at the age of 94.

Joyce was born on August 14, 1931, in Newport News, Virginia, to Milton and Margaret Hogge. She graduated from Achilles High School and went on to earn her Registered Nurse degree from the Mary Immaculate Hospital School of Nursing in Hampton, Virginia.

Nursing was more than a profession to Joyce—it was her calling. For 32 years, she faithfully served as a Registered Nurse at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Hampton, Virginia, where she compassionately cared for veterans and their families. Her kindness, dedication, and gentle spirit touched countless lives throughout her career before retiring in 1986.

Joyce shared a wonderful life with the love of her life, Paul Manley Tysinger. Together they made their home in Hampton, Virginia, where they enjoyed many happy years until Paul’s passing in 2009. In 2014, Joyce moved to The Chesapeake Retirement Community in Newport News, where she remained surrounded by caring staff and treasured friends until her passing.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Paul Manley Tysinger; her parents, Milton and Margaret Hogge; her brother, Milton Hogge Jr.; and her sisters, Frances Tsivaglou and Dorothy Mae Smith; and her nephew, Wayne Lee Tysinger.

Joyce is survived by her sister-in-law, Joyce Shirley Hogge of Wicomico, Virginia; her three beloved godchildren, Margaret Smith Manley of Las Vegas, Nevada, Caren Sexton of Williamsburg, Virginia, and Linda McLaughlin of Florida; her nieces, Margaret Smith Manley, Pamela Farinholt, Lucinda Larsen, Patricia Waldon, Susan Johnson, and Judy Stettler; and her nephews, Ronald Darryl Hogge, James Edwin Smith, and John Watkins. Although distance often separated them, Joyce held each of them close in her heart and loved them dearly.

Joyce also leaves behind many treasured friends who became like family. She shared lifelong friendships with Edna Martin of Williamsburg and Ruth Purinton of The Chesapeake, whose laughter, companionship, and unwavering love enriched her life. The family is also deeply grateful to Fran and Ken Newman, devoted neighbors and dear friends, whose kindness, support, and frequent visits brought Joyce comfort and joy through the years.

Joyce will be remembered for her warm heart, generous spirit, infectious sense of humor, and genuine love for others. She never met a stranger and had a remarkable gift for making everyone feel welcome. Her beautiful smile and her signature greeting, “Hi, dawling,” will forever be remembered by those fortunate enough to have known and loved her.

The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate nursing staff of the Cornerstone Unit at The Chesapeake Retirement Community for the exceptional care, dignity, and love they provided Joyce during her eight years in Memory Care. They also wish to thank the dedicated staff of Wings Over Virginia Hospice for the comfort and support they provided during her final month.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by R. Haydon Smith Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at the funeral home, 245 South Armistead Avenue, Hampton, Virginia, followed immediately by the funeral service. A private interment will take place at Parklawn-Wood Cemetery in Hampton.

Family and friends are also invited to celebrate Joyce’s life at a Celebration of Life reception at 4:00 p.m. on August 5, 2026, in The Horizon Room at The Chesapeake Retirement Community, 955 Harpersville Road, Newport News, Virginia.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Joyce’s memory to The Chesapeake Retirement Community Benevolent Fund, 955 Harpersville Road, Newport News, Virginia, or to Central United Methodist Church, 225 Chapel Street, Hampton, Virginia.

Though Joyce’s presence will be deeply missed, her legacy of kindness, compassion, laughter, and unconditional love will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. Her life was a blessing, her memory a treasure, and she will be forever loved.
