On Tuesday evening, April 6, 2021, in the presence of her daughter, our Mama and Granny left this life with the ones who loved her to begin her time with the ones who left before her. Mama was born 86 years ago on August 24, 1934 to John and Evelyn Tardy in Lynchburg, Virginia. Her childhood was spent in a small house on a hill in Snowden, Virginia with her parents, 4 sisters, June, Marion, Phyllis and Patsy and her only brother, Johnny. At the age of 12 her family moved to Hampton, Virginia where she lived the rest of her days with the last 69 years being on West Queen Street surrounded by her family. It was sometimes jokingly called the Mitchell Compound. Mama attended Hampton High School.

She used to love to tell us that she worked at a soda fountain before she got married in July of 1952 to Hotie Mitchell. They were married until his death in 1997. Mama and Daddy had three children, Danny, Carol Ann and Doug.

Mama's real job on this earth was to be the best Mama and Granny that any of us could ask for. There was never a time that any of us needed her for help, advice or just comfort that she was not there for us. Even to her last day, if any of us had called her for help, she would have done anything possible to be there. She was our fiercest defender when needed and had the most loving and understanding heart when we needed that. She was never disappointed in any of her children, grandchildren or great grandchildren. In her eyes we were all the best at anything we attempted and she was our biggest cheerleader. Losing that unconditional love will be hard for all of us.

Mama was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, S.Hotie Mitchell lll and most recently her beloved son, Danny Hotie Mitchell.

Survivors include her sister Pat Hobgood, her children, Carol Mitchell Wolsh and Doug Mitchell, her grandchildren, Brooke Mitchell Parr (Charlie), Joey Wolsh (Leah), Jamie Wolsh Phillips (Patrick), Danny Mitchell Jr, Matthew Mitchell and Cassidy Mitchell, cherished great grandchildren, Madeleine and Nick Parr, Evie and Elliot Phillips, and Ivan Wolsh.

On Monday April 12, a visitation with family and friends will be held from 1-2 PM at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home. A funeral service will begin at 2pm, with interment following in Parklawn Memorial Park.

There will be a gathering of friends and family at the home of Doug Mitchell following the burial.
