Joyce Crockett Flora, 85, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, June 24, 2026. She was born in Elizabeth City County, (Hampton) to her parents Howard and Ada Crockett. Joyce worked various jobs prior to graduating from Hampton High School in 1959. Shortly after high school she went to work as a telephone operator for C & P Telephone Company. Joyce took a break from working to raise her two children. Joyce eventually went back to work for Bell Atlantic, which became Verizon, retiring after 30 years. She was a born-again Christian, faithful servant to our Lord Jesus Christ and a member of First Assembly of God and Warwick Assembly of God Churches.
Preceded in death by her parents Howard Wesley and Ada Shores Crockett; and siblings, Phoebe E. Crockett Wingard and Aldean Crockett Goodwin; she leaves to cherish her memory, husband, James R. Turnage, Sr.; children, Walter Scott Flora (Jennifer) and Melissa Dean Flora (Floyd); sister, Ethel H. Allison; grandchildren, Erica Turpin (Patrick), Patrick Flora (Christina), Disa Flora (Thomas), Nichole Sandoval (Nicholas), Ashley Fitzhugh (Stephen), Bryan Flora (Nicole), Austin Fitzhugh, and Aubrey Blount; great-grandchildren, Brooklynn, Noah, Gabriel, Adalynn, Abigail, Eva, Ava, Alayah, Kanon, Emma, Kruz, Dawson and Lucus; numerous nieces and nephews as well as her husband’s children, Natalie (Dennis), Lorre, Melanie (Kris) and James, Jr.; his eight grandchildren and their spouses; eleven great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM at Full Gospel Worship Center, 7010 Chestnut Avenue, Newport News by Pastor Gino Bryant. Interment will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park; and all are invited to return to the church for a reception.
