Joyce Maxine Barnes, of Gloucester, Virginia, passed away peacefully on December 28, 2025, at Riverside Walter Reed Hospital in Gloucester. She was born on November 10, 1940 in Scott, Iowa, and spent the majority of her life in Hampton, Virginia, before relocating to Gloucester in 2007 to be closer to family and the place she grew to love.

Joyce was known for her loving spirit and generous heart. She had an unwavering compassion for others and was always willing to help anyone in need — especially animals, who seemed drawn to her gentle nature. Her kindness touched many lives, and she carried a warmth that made everyone feel cared for and welcomed.

In her quiet moments, Joyce found joy in creativity. She loved building dollhouses and painting, with each piece reflecting her patience and attention to detail. Some of her happiest days were spent playing and laughing with her great-grandchildren, Jackson and Lillian, whose presence brought her endless joy and comfort.

Joyce is survived by her sister, Sandra Jones (Roger); her children, Gerald Kelling (Kim), Robert Smith, Frank Smith (Michelle), and Kathryn Norville (Chris); her grandchildren, Justin Pritt (Chrissie), Christopher Norville (Courtney), Hayley Cooper (Kyle), and Abby Smith; and her great-grandchildren Madilyn, Naomi, Jackson, Lillian, and soon-to-arrive baby Christopher. She will be remembered with love by all who knew her.

Service arrangements are currently being planned and will be announced at a later date.
