Obituary

John Wayne Hanchey, 71, of Hampton, Virginia passed away at home on August 25, 2024 after a long illness. He was the son of the late Robert Peterson Hanchey and Hattie Ward Hanchey.

Johnnie was predeceased by his parents; his three brothers, Robert P. Hanchey, Jr, Jerry B. Hanchey, and James Gary Hanchey; and his sister, Betty Charlotte Hanchey. He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Joan Newman Hanchey; his sister, Robin Blake of Hampton; sister-in-law, Audrey Newman Dalli of Shrewsbury, MA; his son Christopher Hanchey; stepchildren, Courtney Thomas of Hampton, Lloyd Thomas Jr. of Virginia Beach, Erin Hicks of Anderson, SC; and grandson, Wyland Hanchey.

Johnnie loved being on the water, going out on his boat fishing, and spending time camping with his lifelong friends Timmy Rose, Jimmy Newman, Mack Eborn, Al Rubinstein, George Palko, and Kenny Rae Cantrell. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday, September 3, 2024 at St. John's Episcopal Church, Hampton with interment to follow in St. John's Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 3 PM to 7 PM on Sunday, September 1, 2024 at the family home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests expressions of sympathy be made in the form of memorial donations to the Animal Aid Society, 80 Butler Farm Road, Hampton, VA  in Johnnie's name. ( click here to make a memorial donation )
